Character Witness – Joshua Grant (Obedience, Vol. 1 by Lizzie B. Brown)

Welcome to Character Witness, where we let our poor antagonized characters take center stage, and the authors have nothing to say.

Who are you?

Joshua Grant. I’m a professor in the English department at Pine Grove University.

Tell us about your author (and include links to where we can find them):

Lizzie B. Brown is an avid smut reader who decided to start sharing spicy stories of her own creation. She currently lives in the PNW with her dog, Bella. Although Lizzie is new to writing, she has been cultivating her love of reading since she was a young child. You can usually find her in her writing cave with flashy LED rainbow lights or chilling by her fireplace with a glass of wine in hand.

Obedience, Volume One

What are you doing on a Friday night?

Grading papers, unless Eddie tries to drag me out. Thankfully, he’s backed off since he found out I’m seeing someone again. Apparently, I’m not allowed time to myself when single, but it’s okay if I’m in a relationship? I don’t know with him.

It’s Tuesday night, and your friends/allies/enemy-to-lover have dragged you out to your world’s version of a karaoke bar. What do you sing?

I don’t see Eddie dragging me to karaoke, thank God. Cassie might. I don’t know that I could sing in front of her. I’m not very good at it. Maybe, if I had enough to drink, I would let her drag me up there for a duet.

How did you get your scar?

My emotional scar? My ex, Janet. We were high school sweethearts that reconnected at a reunion. I thought our relationship was going great, so I was completely blindsided when she dumped me over the phone. It hit me pretty hard. It still does. It makes it hard to not panic in my new relationship. I didn’t want to be caught off guard like that ever again.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

This is going to sound lame, but when I would go to the park and write out fantasy short stories. No one knows I used to do that.

If we were to ask your closest friends what your catchphrase is, what would they say?

That’s a good question. I’ll have to ask Eddie. I know my girlfriend would say it’s, “Yes, my Goddess.”

What was your best worst decision?

Hooking up with a 20-something in a bar bathroom in Florida.

Every main character has a ghost, something that haunts them. What is yours?

What I could have been if I had pursued writing instead of teaching. It still haunts me, the idea that I gave up on myself.

Tell me about your guilty pleasure or sinful habit:

Um, I don’t think that’s appropriate for this interview. It’s not exactly PG. (EDITORS NOTE: color me intrigued)

What is your chicken soup for the soul? It could be a food, a material item, an activity or endeavor, a comfort read, or a movie. Whatever it is, tell us about it:

My girlfriend, Cassie. I was really lost after my ex and my friends didn’t understand how to help me. Cassie gets it. She sees when I’m spiraling and helps me work through it.

If you have a formal education, what did you study, and how are you applying the knowledge daily? If you have a vocation or trade, what is it, and how did you come into it?

I’m an English major. I usually teach the intro English classes and Creative Writing.

If you could save one thing from your burning house, what would it be?

My journals.

Name your irrational fear:

Being alone.

Anything you’d like your maker to know?

To my creator- I feel like you’re a little sadistic.

And since we all love an apple crate, here’s yours. Air out your grievances, declare a statement to the world!

I don’t like when my students try to force themselves on me, write me love letters, or cat call me. It’s demeaning and highly inappropriate.
