Book Review – The Last Lunar Witch by S.F. Henne

A witch with “broken” magic pursues her passion for alchemy in the big city, determined to make it on her own, outside of the long-reaching shadows of her parents and successful brother.

Part urban fantasy, part cozy fantasy, all action, fun, and adventure. The Last Lunar Witch, from fellow SPFBOX participant S.F. Henne, follows Nyssa as she gains her bearings in Arkirith, and lands firmly in the crosshairs of demonspawn, warlocks, and Inquisitors – the witches who hunt their own.

LOOK. I’ll preface by saying this book immediately spoke to many of the things I love: a witch with “broken” (see: misunderstood) magic, witches hunting their own kind, tea that binds magic, Enforcers enacting the laws of magic … like … stop me when this sounds familiar.

I can only imagine S.F. Henne was as amused as I was by the parallels between our books , and what a treat to read how another author translated those themes/tropes.

But The Last Lunar Witch! This is a fun, fast-paced read. The cozy start is an excellent entry to the world, giving the lore and rules of Arkirith (including the many different factions of law enforcement and magic-wielders) the developmental time they need so that when the main plot kicks off, you’re ready to be whipped right along with Nyssa.

I’m a sucker for solid magic systems, and Henne created a really fun one here. Witches have Solar Magic, shifters have Lunar Magic, and never shall the twain meet. But this is second-world urban fantasy, so knowing that rule, you know you’re in for some fun. The curveball of the nephilim characters was a fantastic way to open up the scope of the universe, hinting towards the grander schemes and factions at play while also leaving me starving for more of Kaelan (hell, and way more of Nathaniel and Nyssa sniping at each other. Just DELIGHTFUL).

And if all that wasn’t enough – the book features a sentient coffeeshop with sassy ovens, and I am in love.
