Darkly Simmons: Witch of the Demesne | Character Witness

Character interview with Darkly SImmons, the romantic love interest in Ritual Dues by B.L. Brown

Welcome to Character Witness, where we let our poor antagonized characters take center stage, and the authors have nothing to say.

Who are you?

A mite rude for an opener, aye? Ach, well, I suppose you didnae get my card, and you’ve nae Seen me. Name’s Keir, but I prefer Darkly these days. Bit of a long story, that. I’ll respond to either, but it certainly tells me a lot about you, depending which name you use.

Tell us about your author (and include links to where we can find them):

B.L. Brown is the disaster that thought up myself, Milla, and the rest of the mayhem. She’ll tell you she’s a mom, craft beer fanatic, and marathon runner. I’ll tell you she’s a pain in my witchy arse. Outside of the Witchy World of C.R.O.W., I ken she writes monster romance set in Appalachia, and works with a few other authors to edit and publish a monster romance anthology series. If any of that interests you, she’s all over this internet thing:

What books are you in?

Shady Depths, which was cold and lovely, though I’m not really sure why. Ritual Income, which was an experience from the moment I set foot in St. Augustine, and now Ritual Dues, which … well, I’m fair wabbit after that one, but I’ll let you figure out why.

What are you doing on a Friday night?

Ideally? Sittin’ across from a grumpy little witch nursing her bourbon while I enjoy a rum cocktail at Drake’s Fire.

It’s Tuesday night, and your friends/allies/enemy-to-lover have dragged you to your world’s version of a karaoke bar. What do you sing?

Oh! This is an easy one. Milla gets flustered whenever I hop up there and belt out Ludo’s “Love Me Dead.” Wee hen is a treat when she’s trying not to look like she’s having fun.

What was your best worst decision?

Taking that job in St. Augustine. Couldnae have predicted where it would lead me, but wouldnae trade a minute of it.

Every main character has a ghost, something that haunts them. What is yours?

A literal ghost. Sort of. They’re technically Shades, different from ghasts, geists, and haints, but mine’s a wee Shade I’ve known since I first fell in. A bit of a familiar, she is.

Although, now that I’m thinking about it, Little Shadow is very familiar

Tell me about your guilty pleasure or sinful habit:

Look. We all have our coping mechanisms, and I’m no better than anyone else. What goes into my vape pen is between Rai and meself. I trust her to take care of me and only blend the herbs I need to do my job. Or escape. Doesnae hurt anyone.

If you could save one thing from your burning house, what would it be?

The photo of my family. Lou keeps the albums locked up somewhere, says keepin’ them around her semi-detached was too depressing, but I managed to grab one and keep it for myself. Dinnae ken what I’d do if I lost it.

Anything you’d like your maker to know?

I am begging you for one, JUST ONE quiet, calm night with Milla. Nae desecrants, nae witches, nae curses or hexes. Just me and my leannán. Please.
